The United Veterans Council of Jamestown is holding an essay contest to find this year’s Memorial Day Miss Veterans Poppy. They are currently making preparations for the Annual Jamestown Memorial Day Parade. The essay contest is extended to all local 5th – 8th grade girls to become the 4th annual Miss Veterans Poppy for the parade that will be held Monday, May 28, 2017 at 10:00 am in Jamestown.
They are inviting all 5th – 8th grade girls to prepare an essay about Memorial Day. The essay would need to be no more than 200 words explaining why Memorial Day is important to them and what Memorial Day means to them. They should also include in their essay if they have any veterans in their family. Each essay needs to be tagged with the students name and school that they attend, along with a phone number that they can be reached at.
The selected girl would ride in the parade, receive an honorary sash, and present a wreath at the Memorial Day cemetery services in Lakeview Cemetery immediately following the parade. She would also join the United Veterans Council for Saturday Morning Breakfast Club Saturday, May 26th.
We will be accepting essays through Monday, May 7, 2018. We ask that anyone wanting to submit an essay please mail the essay to: United Veterans Council of Jamestown, C/O: M Paladino, 2538 Fisher Hill Rd. Kennedy, NY 14747 or email to: melodieonly@hotmail.com as soon as their essay is complete. The Veterans Council will complete a review of all essays at their meeting Wednesday, May 9th, 2018 at 6:30 pm. and announce the winner Tuesday, May 10, 2018.
They are hoping for great success with the return of these essays as they continue planning this annual event and to find the honorary Miss Veterans Poppy for the Jamestown Memorial Day parade.
