Roger Tory Peterson began his celebrated career as an artist and naturalist by opening his eyes, ears, and heart to the wildlife that he observed in his own backyard. Never has there been a better time for all of us to take notice of and learn to appreciate the natural world outside our windows; while many of us are cooped up at home, spring life is bursting all around us.

Birds are the undeniable harbingers of spring; their arrival is accompanied by the music of their song, the unfurling of green leaves, and the blooming of pastel blossoms. This, in combination with Roger Tory Peterson’s lifelong passion for birds and the undeniable benefits of embracing the natural world, has inspired us to initiate a “30 Birds in 30 Days” social media campaign. For the next month, we will share images and stories-from Peterson, RTPI staff, and friends-of the birds that have inspired us. It is our hope that this content will not only serve as a beacon of solace during these trying times, but also encourage us all to delight in the beauty and vigor of our backyard birds. Because, in the words of Peterson himself, “Birds are eloquent expressions of life and vitality, and watching them makes you a bit more alive…”
