Chautauqua Striders will enlarge its collection of reading material for tutors to use with students as a result of books recently received from Prendergast Library.

“Thank you for the generous donation of these books. They will be used constantly as our students read 10 minutes or more each day, and they are always looking for new titles,” said Debbie Hargis, head tutor for on-site tutoring at Chautauqua Striders.

“When we challenged the kids to read at least 10 minutes a day, with an ice cream party as the reward, they completed a chart with a total of over 1,000 minutes in a little more than a month,” according to Brelynn Abers, a Striders’ tutor for elementary and middle school students.

Chautauqua Striders received some of the books through the generosity of local Time Warner Cable employees, who conducted a holiday book drive to benefit children in the community and worked with Prendergast Library to identify partner agencies to distribute them.

Other books came through a generous donation from Dan and Linda Fellows, who established the Family Literacy Fund in 2014. To achieve the Fellows’ goal of getting books into the hands of those who need them for educational purposes, this fund enables non-profit organizations serving children and families to obtain titles from the library’s ongoing book sale.
