St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension with the presentation of a Choral Evensong service on Thursday, May 5th at 7pm, in the church sanctuary, 410 North Main Street, corner of 4th and Main, Jamestown. The concert is free and open to the public.
“Evensong or Vespers is one of the great treasures of the Episcopal/Anglican tradition.” explains St. Luke’s Rector, the Rev. Luke Fodor. “Choral evening prayer creates a sense of awe and mystery that lifts the soul and frees the spirit. What better day to hold a special Evensong than the Feast of Ascension Day, when the church ponders the mystery of Christ’s ascent into heaven.”
The St. Luke’s Church Choir will lead the service with the ancient canticles the Magnificat (the Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimitis (the Song of Simeon). The choir will be joined that evening by the vocal performance group One Accord, directed by Laura Flowers Hotchkiss (of Serendipity). One Accord is a vocal group of homeschooled teenagers that rehearses at St. Luke’s twice a week. The group typically performs a mix of sacred and secular music.
“Having a good rehearsal venue was a high priority for One Accord when we began last fall.” says Ms. Hotchkiss. “When I reached out to St. Luke’s Music Director Andrew Schmidt about the possibility of using their chapel, there was no hesitation from him or the Rev. Fodor in making that a reality for us. We have truly been blessed to use their wonderful space each week to practice, and we are honored to be able to express our thanks by participating in this Evensong service to celebrate the Ascension of Christ. We will be performing three spirited numbers, one of which called, “Praise!” we learned specially for this event.”
St. Luke’s has a long history as a venue for musical performance and also hosts many of the Jamestown Concert Association events as well as their own public offerings. By hosting a series of concerts and events throughout the year, the church intends to increase and enhance the current opportunities for music appreciation in the area.
