The Southwestern High School Sailing Team was invited to compete in The National Phebe Corckran King Invitational Co-hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club and Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis Maryland this past weekend, May 11-12.

Some of the best High School teams from the Midwest and Northeast were also in attendance at the 2-day event. 18 schools attended from the Chicago area, Detroit, Cleveland and from along the east coast, making for some heady competition. Southwestern made an impressive showing winning 2nd overall. The team was represented by Cameron Turner and Patrick Kelly sailing A Division, with Will Turner and Brooks Turcotte sailing B Division.

Saturday morning started out with a light breeze from the East at about 5 knots. The course was set up right off of Severn Sailing Association’s sea wall and the windward mark was up by Trident point making for a tricky windward mark rounding. Increasingly inconsistent winds cut the day short, however sailors were able to get through 10 A division races and 8 B division races before calling it a day. It was a battle all day within the top 5, showing the competitiveness of the fleet, with the back half of the fleet not too far behind. Southwestern had a solid day of racing with eight finishes in the top three to end the day in 2nd place. All in all it was a great Day 1 of the Phebe Corckran King Memorial Invitational.

Sunday morning was rainy and cloudy but the day started out with a solid 5-10 knots of breeze out of the ENE building throughout the day. A and B division switched boats, A going into FJ’s and B going into the C420’s. This breeze was the same direction as the end of the day Saturday but the wind was up in velocity. Sailors were able to finish the day out with 18 races a piece in each division. Despite conditions, Southwestern managed to hold on to their placing throughout the day, ultimately securing 2nd overall.

St. Mary’s (MD) took 1st place, Southwestern in 2nd place, and Toms River North (NJ) placed 3rd overall.

Southwestern will be heading to Long Island this upcoming weekend, May 18th and 19th, to compete in the New York State Championships to defend their title. They will be hosting the Chautauqua Lake Invite the following weekend at Lakewood Beach on Saturday May 25th.
