A sign, bedecked with saws, saw blades, and a smattering of other tools hangs from the rafters of the store front. Light beams through the large windows, as bright as the smiling face behind the register. A wide variety of tools, nuts, and bolts gleam from the shelving, ready for contractors and do-it-yourselfers alike. Sherman Hardware is a small town hardware store fully stocked and eager to help with quick fixes and projects.
“It’s kind of a man cave,” owner Jim Chambers says of his shop. “I’ve owned it for nine years.” Chambers had worked in factories for several years before taking up the store. “I worked 28 years in a factory – my background is helpful; I can talk plumbing, I can talk electric…I know my nuts and bolts.” With a far reaching history, the building that houses the store was built in 1889. “Talk about an old town!” Jim laughs.
Sherman Hardware offers a large selection of goods and services, from glass cutting and chainsaw repair to a full line of paints. “We do a little bit of everything,” Jim says. “I consider myself a convenience hardware store. I always say ‘Home Depot gets the toilet, I get the wax ring.” Offering chain saw sharpening, a sizable array of tools and parts, Sherman Hardware makes household projects and building adventures easier. Chocked full of the odds and ends needed to get the job done, this hometown hardware store is a must see.
Jim also keeps his customers’ pocketbooks in mind. “I try to keep my prices as low as possible,” he explains. While the store doesn’t run weekly specials, it saves its customers money in the
everyday purchases. Good customer service is another added value of visiting the local shop – Jim is a local resident, and knows a majority of his customers by name. “I grew up in this town, my parents grew up in this town – it’s kind of unique to be able to interact with all the customers who come in.” Often, you can find Jim behind the counter, ready to help with any need.
