Kim Johnstone Mann has been a constant presence at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown for as long as most people remember. She has been greeting visitors to the offices on North Main Street for the past 30 years as the church’s Parish Administrator, but her experience there goes back much farther. The Parish House, where her office is located, was actually her childhood home when her father served as the Associate Rector in the early 1970s. She is a graduate of Jamestown High School and has been an area resident her entire life. She currently lives in Kimball Stand with her husband, Doug.
Kim, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer, has not let her illness slow her down. While undergoing treatments this past year she has also helped the St. Luke’s parish continue to function smoothly during the transitional process of new leadership. Her treatment plan includes trips to Buffalo every 2 weeks for chemotherapy with a second visit the following day for an injection. Once this treatment is completed, she will begin radiation therapy.
Luke Fodor, the church’s new Rector is appreciative of Kim’s history with the church and her dedication to her work. “When you start a new job, you look for someone to show you the ropes. When you’re the head of an organization it can be tricky to find the right person to advise you” states Fodor. “If you extend the metaphor, you could say that Kim is the neck of the organization; transmitting valuable information, turning the attention in the proper direction and supporting all the critical operations.”
Family, friends and fellow parishioners are planning to return the favor of Kim’s good works by holding a Benefit in her honor on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Fluvanna Fire Hall, 3536 Fluvanna Avenue Ext, Jamestown, NY. Tickets for the Benefit are $10 and include a Chicken Dinner. (Children under 6 will receive a free hot dog dinner). Raffle drawings featuring five cash prizes totaling $1975 will be held throughout the day – participants need not be present to win. Raffle Donations are $10 for one entry or $20 for three. A Chinese Auction, Bake Sale and 50/50 tickets will also be available at the event. Live music will be provided by the St. Luke’s Band, SweetAzz Cream Corn, Blue Lizard Trio, TPT, Terraplane and Headbangers Ball.
10% of the Benefit’s total proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The remainder will be used to cover the Mann’s mounting medical and travel expenses.
Tickets for both the Event/Dinner and the Raffle are available at the St. Luke’s Church Office, JS Auto Supply, 1215 E 2nd Street, Jamestown, and C&A Auto and Marine, 22 Maple Avenue, Celeron.
Businesses or individuals wishing to donate items for the Bake Sale or Auctions may contact Amber Burnett at 716-720-7151 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“As the Scripture says, when one part of the body suffers the whole body suffers and rallies to support the injured member.” remarked Rev. Fodor. “At St. Luke’s we’re so happy to help Kim who has helped us for so many years!”
