Journey Gunderson, the executive director of the National Comedy Center, the nation’s official cultural institution dedicated to the art of comedy, was honored by Buffalo Business First as a recipient of its 2021 C-Level Executive Award.

The C-Level Executive Award recognizes Western New York’s most effective business leaders. It is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards within the business community in the Buffalo/Western New York region.

The 10th annual award ceremony, hosted by Buffalo Business First, took place on November 4th at the Statler in Buffalo, where hundreds gathered to honor the award winners.

Gunderson was the only museum and cultural institution executive to be honored in 2021. Other honorees included senior Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers and Chief Financial Officers from Seneca Gaming Corp., Kaleida Health, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, 43North, Phillips Lytle LLP, City Year Buffalo, Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and KSL Diagnostics Inc.

In its profile of Gunderson as a C-Level award recipient, Buffalo Business First cited Gunderson’s leadership of the National Comedy Center since its inception:

“For over seven years, Journey led the planning, strategy, fundraising and creative development for this project. All that was based on Lucille Ball’s wish for Jamestown to become a destination to honor the great minds of comedians.

All that worked has paid off. The 37,000-square-foot museum opened in 2018. Since then, it has topped national lists such USA Today’s “Best New Museum” and Time magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places.”
