Jamestown’s Nichol Haskins loves to write. In fact her blog: kiddiescornerdeals.com sees half-a-million unique visitors a year. Nichol says it’s a parenting blog that focuses on shopping deals for kids, and product reviews for mom and dad. The stay-at-home mom has spent four years honing her trade, and now is able to make some money off her hobby.
“I still don’t think I’m a great writer,” said Mrs. Haskins, “but I’ve been doing it for so long that I feel I’m getting better at it – plus I love it!”
And it’s this love for blogging that landed Nichol Haskins in the national spotlight. After working with Kohl’s Department Store on a back-to-school campaign, the retailer was so impressed with Nichol’s blog; they asked her to participate in the Giving with Kohl’s Campaign for the holiday season; one of just fifteen bloggers nationwide to receive such an honor. Nichol was given a $150 Kohl’s gift card to buy Christmas presents for a family in need this Christmas season. With the help of The Salvation Army of Jamestown and United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, a family was identified, a Christmas “wish-list” was created, and the Haskins’ family went shopping.
“The neat thing about this whole experience was that my children helped me buy the gifts for this family,” said Nichol. “Being able to show your kids the true meaning of Christmas by having them buy gifts for other children less fortunate than them, is truly amazing.”
Equally amazing is the fact that the Haskins’ family was able to provide a Christmas for a local family they have never even met.
“Every child deserves to smile, especially on Christmas morning,” said Nichol. “To know that my family helped provide those smiles for another family makes me extremely happy.”
But it’s her children’s joy that really makes this story so special. Nichol said her daughter didn’t even realize that some children aren’t able to receive a present on Christmas morning. When she found out that she could help provide a present, she was ecstatic.
“To be able to talk to your children about giving back is one thing,” said Nichol, “but when you get an opportunity to show them through an experience like this; it really does take it to a whole new level.”
