JHS Assistant Principal and Head Football Coach Tom Langworthy, with the support of Lincoln Elementary School Principal Katie Russo and JPS Athletic Director Ben Drake, started a Wrestling Club at Lincoln to teach students about the sport and help engage students in school through athletics. The program had approximately 35 wrestlers involved, kindergarten through fourth grades. In addition to Coach Langworthy, JHS student volunteers Joshua Tonkin, Jonah Tonkin and Ben Schrader helped, as well as Lincoln Elementary School teacher, Amy Langworthy, as attendance and check in/check out helper. On the final night of the program, every student earned a Lincoln School Wrestling t-shirt.
“I am proud of this program because school-based athletic programs at elementary schools are not common, but very effective for student engagement and empowerment,” said Coach Langworthy. “Hopefully, this can be a blueprint for other sports programs for elementary schools.”
