While Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) takes stock of what butterflies live on the property, you can learn how to capture and identify them.

On Saturday, July 6, 1-2:30 p.m., participants in a Butterfly Hunt will have a short indoor introduction to how to use a butterfly net and how to identify local species.

You can be part of this group that then heads outside to a field that is a short walk from the Nature Center. There you can capture these delightful creatures for identification and release.

Butterfly nets will be provided, but please bring yours if you have one as the supply is limited.

The program will be led by Craig Thompson, a former ACNC naturalist, Department of Environmental Conservation educator, and current Vice President of the Audubon Council of New York State. Thompson loves to share his knowledge and passion for the natural world and increase people’s knowledge of how they can contribute to science.

Since the program is outdoors, you can expect to walk half a mile to a mile altogether.

The fee is $8 for adults, $6 for Nature Center members and children ages 3-15, and free for ages 2 and under. Reservations are appreciated by calling (716) 569-2345 or going online to AudubonCNC.org/Programs and clicking through “Current Schedule.” Walk-ins are welcome.

If you come early, you can observe bird banding at the pavilion by the west entrance. Weather permitting, ornithologists will be banding from 6 a.m. to noon. Then enjoy your BYO lunch in the picnic area.

You can also look forward to Audubon’s annual Monarch Butterfly Festival, this year on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, August 31.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa.
