The Fenton History Center will be holding the third Slice of History Pizza Challenge on Saturday April 9 from 1-3 p.m. at St. James Church, 27 Allen St. Jamestown. The event will benefit the education programs offered for both children and adults throughout the year at the Center. The Jamestown Italian Heritage Dancers will perform with live accompaniment at 1:30 p.m.

The event features many area pizzerias who will be vying for the Fenton Favorite Slice Award. Last year’s award winner was Fresco Pizza and Wings, The Ashville General Store and Buzzetto’s Pizza. Any pizzeria or restaurant is encouraged to participate.

“We are really hoping that area residents will come and share their Italian heritage and family connections,” says Fenton archivist and genealogist Karen Livsey, “we need to build our local Italian family genealogy files. Over sixty family trees along with photos and accompanying information on file for the families will be displayed. There are many more families we need to add and complete.”

Along with the pizza tasting and voting, volunteers will be set up to record stories and recollections from the community. They will scan family pictures, gather identification information and other related information about the pictures and then return the pictures. All are invited to attend and share their remembrances of growing up in Jamestown through the recordings and pictures. Stories and pictures about grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, businesses, clubs, school and friends are all needed. Volunteers are needed to assist with the pizza tasting, genealogy information collection, and the oral history project. Temporary exhibits about the Italians in Jamestown will also be featured. “We are very excited about this event, this year we are in a home church where many Italian families are comfortable. It is a beautiful, large space. We have room for the pizza vendors, dancers, oral history and the genealogy work,” says Joni Blackman, Director of the Fenton History Center.

The pizza challenge is sponsored in part by Fresco Pizza and Wings. Other sponsors are welcome. The admission fee is $10 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Admission includes sampling all the pizzas and a beverage. Visit www.fentonhistorycenter.org or call 664-6256 for more information about signing up to vie for Jamestown’s Favorite Pizza, or to share your family stories and images or to attend the event.
