CRYS Accepting Applications, Welcoming Coaches

The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony is accepting applications for its three orchestras that begin rehearsals in January. Students will receive special coaching, including by faculty of SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music. Following on the success of its delightful Fall Chamber Concert, the Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS) is now accepting applications for all three of its orchestras.
Rehearsals start in January for beginning string players (NYSSMA level I) in Prelude Strings, intermediate students (levels II and III) in Young Artists Orchestra (YAO), and advanced students (levels IV, V and VI) in Chamber Orchestra. Prelude rehearses on Friday afternoons beginning January 18, and YAO and Chamber on Saturday mornings beginning January 19, all at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lakewood.
Acclaimed CRYS Music Director and Conductor Bryan Eckenrode leads all three CRYS orchestras. The training he offers will be enhanced with regular instruction by staff teachers and periodic coaching by outside professional educators.
Staff Prelude Coach Marie Karbacka is a CRYS alum with degrees from Mercyhurst University and SUNY Fredonia. She is Southwestern Central Schools Director of Orchestras for grades 5-12. With degrees from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and DePaul School of Music, Staff String Coach Cody Hiller teaches at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts, plays in the Southern Tier Symphony and Western New York Chamber Orchestra and is Concertmaster of the Warren Philharmonic.
Outside coaches, all who perform extensively, are Marc Guy who will coach brass; Sarah Hamilton, woodwinds; Kieran Hanlon, lower strings; Kay Stonefelt, percussion; and Jennifer Jansen, upper strings. Jansen is Erie Junior Philharmonic’s Overture and Chamber strings instructor.
The others are faculty members of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music.
Students will have the opportunity to attend local professional performances, and plans are underway to combine campus tours with performances at SUNY Fredonia and Mercyhurst University.
The CRYS season will conclude with the Spring Gala Concert, Sunday, May 19, 2019, at Chautauqua Institution’s Elizabeth S. Lenna Hall.
CRYS students pay tuition, but no one is turned away for inability to pay. Interested students are encouraged to apply at
Fall 2018 Chamber Orchestra members need not reapply.
