The Crary Art Gallery will feature artist Hannah Steele in its upcoming exhibition “Hannah Steele: Architecture of Light” which opens on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 12 pm – 6 pm, and runs through July 17, 2022.
This show is a collection of figurative and interior oil paintings, which study how light travels throughout, builds new structures within, and activates domestic spaces. Steele’s body of work includes figures, interiors, small works and portraits.
Says the artist, “In my work as an oil painter, I use the interiors I inhabit on a daily basis as subject matter. I am interested in how the interior holds both the tangible and the intangible; these spaces are occupied equally by material objects and bodies [and] by the immaterial dance of light. I am particularly interested in how, within the space of a painting, light becomes just as much a concrete form as anything else. It takes up and travels throughout space as a body would and creates new geometric structures within existing architectures. Along with this relationship between the material and immaterial, I aspire in my paintings to attain a harmonious relationship between flatness and depth. I create tightly-rendered areas of illusion that read as three-dimensional spaces and forms, along with cultivating areas that embrace the flatness and materiality of oil paint on canvas. The result is an image that oscillates between a portal pulling the viewer into deep space and a flat surface revealing process of construction and nature of materials used.”
Steele graduated from Messiah University in 2019, after which she began showing her oil paintings primarily in Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was named a finalist in the 14th International Art Renewal Center’s Salon Competition and was Artist in Residence at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA. As of 2021, Steele has returned to her home state of Massachusetts, to pursue a MFA in painting at Boston University. Learn more about the artist and at hannahsteeleartist.com.

On Saturday, July 9 at 2 pm, the Crary Art Gallery will offer a Pysanky workshop with Shandra Wilson. Beautiful designs are achieved by writing on an egg with a wax-loaded pen or “Kistka” and then dipping in colored dyes to achieve layers, with the final step to melt the wax and reveal the design. Shandra brings an interesting twist by adding an element of tie dye to this traditional art form. She will teach a new technique adding an element of tie dye to this traditional art form. The workshop will take place at the gallery and registration is open at: https://www.craryartgallery.org/pysankyworkshop.html
