David Akin, a native of Chautauqua, has spent ten seasons working in Antarctica. He will give a presentation entitled “Antarctica: A Day in the Life With David Akin” at Bellinger Hall (77 Hedding Avenue) at Chautauqua Institution on Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by Chautauqua Rails to Trails. All trail and nature lovers are invited to this to hear about Akin’s experiences.

Akin is a member of the Board of Directors of Chautauqua Rails to Trails. While working in Antarctica, among his many responsibilities, Akin has worked very hard to improve several segments of a well-established hiking trail system, the Ross Island Trail System, at McMurdo Station and Scott Base. He will share his knowledge and experience about his life and work there. There will also be opportunities to ask questions.

As the Chautauqua season will have concluded, guests are advised to drive into the main gate and head west (left) to the destination. No gate passes or car passes are required. Please be aware that GPS may direct drivers to enter through the Elm Gate, which will be closed at that time of day. Parking is available close to the venue.

Chautauqua Rails to Trails is a non-profit organization and will welcome a $5 donation from each attendee. Board members invite all interested individuals, on and off the grounds, to this sharing of an extraordinary and relevant experience.
