Rowing is the ultimate team sport relying on everyone in the boat to be in sync to make the boat go fast. In rowing, there are no individual stars: the boat as a team wins or loses the race. Additionally, rowing is a tremendous cross training sport that uses all the major muscle groups in the body. Rowing (or crew) is also a non-contact sport with significantly reduced risk of head injury compared to other sports. CLRA high school rowers utilize either 4 or 8-person boats with one additional person known as the steersman. While the rowers provide the power in the shell, the steersman is the leader of the boat steering and encouraging as needed. The steersman is typically a person of small stature.

The team competes in regattas (races) in Erie, PA, and Buffalo, Pittsford, Ithaca, and Saratoga Springs, NY. Indoor practices start on Tuesday, February 27 running from 5:30PM-7:30PM, Monday – Friday. Outdoor practices, dependent upon weather, begin March 19 at the boathouse 18 Jones and Gifford, Jamestown. Practices outdoors follow the same schedule as indoor sessions. For more information on the team, see CLRA’s web site at Contact information for three of the team’s coaches is also provided there.
