Chautauqua County Health Network Kicking-off New Market Project

Contributed by: CCHN

The Chautauqua County Health Network (CCHN) through the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grant is pleased to announce the Healthy Community Market program launch at Allen Street Grocery as part of a plan for increasing access to healthy food options in Jamestown. March is National Nutrition Month and what better way to celebrate than with the establishment of the new Allen Street Grocery Healthy Community Market! Community members were invited to attend the kick-off last Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., which will included nutritious prepared food samples, cooking tips, and recipes.

Neil Patel and his wife Jagu, owners of Allen Street Grocery, their General Manager Scott Travis, and the store staff embraced the program and agreed to pilot the Healthy Community Market on Jamestown’s eastside. Allen Street’s collaboration with CCHN and a shared vision and understanding of the importance of having access to healthy affordable foods is making this initiative a reality.

The store will dedicate an area set up to offer fresh produce, healthy Grab-n-Go items such as fruit and veggie cups, and nutritious beverages. The addition of healthy food choices and fresh produce options will complement Allen Street Grocery’s inventory, providing a more comprehensive shopping experience. Creating Healthy Community Markets is part of a long-term strategy to improve the health of the community and contribute to the prevention of obesity and diabetes. As participants of the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grant from the New York State Department of Health, Allen Street Grocery and CCHN will continue to work together to increase availability of healthy, fresh foods in Jamestown.

The Allen Street Grocery and Deli is located at 430 Allen Street, and is open every day from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The mission of CCHN is to strengthen the local healthcare and wellness deliver system. For more information on Creating Healthy Schools and Communities, go to www.cchn.net.
