Stop by the library this summer to join in the fun of our all-ages Summer Reading Challenge!

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is “Tails and Tales,” so join in learning about the animals and stories of the Jamestown area. We have reading log and literacy themed bingo sheets for kids and teens, and book review forms for adults.

Stop by the Library starting on June 26 to pick up these activities. Can’t make it into the building? Participate online using the ReadSquared App! Visit prendergastlibrary.org to learn more about Summer Reading online.

Children and teens can earn free books and grand prize entries for each reading log and bingo sheet they complete; adults earn a grand prize entry for each book they read. Prizes this year include a skateboard set for kids, and gift certificates to local area attractions such as Jamestown Bowling Company, the Sprinkle Cone, and the Labyrinth.

Wednesdays at the Library:

The Library is offering weekly Outdoor Storytimes every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. on the Library’s front lawn. Librarians read 2-3 books, offer early literacy tips to parents, sing songs, and lead games. You may even see special guests from the Jamestown Jackals, the Chautauqua County Humane Society, and other local organizations! Following storytime, all-ages crafts will be provided outdoors at 11 a.m.

The Jamestown Mobile Market will also visit the Library from 11:30 to 12:30 on Wednesdays. The Mobile Market offers affordable, healthy food options and now accepts SNAP/EBT benefits. The Library is once again serving as a location for the YMCA’s summer lunch program, and free lunches will be provided for those under 18 years of age from 11:30 to 1:00 every weekday.

Special Events:

As part of Summer Reading, we also have special events at the Library! We will welcome Molly Brown from the Cornell Cooperative Extension on July 8th at 10:30 a.m. for a Worm Farm event. Molly will demonstrate the benefits of worm farms, and participants will receive a take-‘n’-make kit with materials to make their own. Advance registration is required.

On July 16th at 10:30 a.m., “The Butterfly Guy” Jerry Schneider will visit the library to give a presentation for kids on Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies. The presentation will be followed by a t-shirt decorating craft. (T-shirts will be provided by the Library.) Advance registration is required.

On July 10th and August 7th, the Library will host Chautauqua Institution’s mobile poetry makerspace from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to create and share their work on the Library’s front lawn.

If you’re looking for educational activities you can access from home, the Library’s virtual programs offer an alternative to in-person gatherings. Storytimes are livestreamed every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. on the Library’s Facebook page.

If you want to explore STEAM activities at home, check out one of the Library’s Science Kits. With topics ranging from water surface tension to computer science, there’s something for everyone ages 5-18! Launchpads are also available for checkout. These tablets come pre-loaded with educational games and interactive learning tools for ages 1-5. For those with an interest in purchasing books, the Library’s ongoing booksale features children’s books for $1.00 each.
