Meghan O’Connell, a second-year student of the UPMC Chautauqua WCA School of Radiology, was selected the recipient of the scholarship that honors the life of Vincent Messina. The award is a $2,000 credit toward O’Connell’s tuition at the hospital-based School of Radiology. It is the largest scholarship awarded by WCA Foundation which supports UPMC Chautauqua WCA, the education of its employees, and Starflight.

Messina was a member of the first graduating class of the radiology school and worked for the hospital for more than 30 years. His family chose to memorialize him with a scholarship for a student in the second year of their schooling because of the financial stress experienced by students in the 22-month continuous program. In addition to classroom instruction, students in the hospital-based program receive clinical rotations which prepare them with a richer, more in-depth education than those who attend college based radiology programs.

When applying for the WCA Foundation scholarship, O’Connell related her decision to enter the field of radiology stemmed from a desire to do something that made a difference in individual lives. She has found her decision to be a part of the UPMC Chautauqua WCA School of Radiology rewarding and the most beneficial decision she has made for herself.

Funding for the scholarship is generated from the Vincent Messina Memorial Scholarship Fund at WCA Foundation. The fund was started in 2013 and has grown to almost $97,000 through the efforts of the Messina family, their friends, Vince’s colleagues at UPMC Chautauqua WCA, the staff of WCA Foundation, and the staff and students of the UPMC Chautauqua WCA School of Radiology. The sixth annual Vincent Messina Memorial Golf Tournament that helps grow the scholarship fund is planned for June 1, 2019 at Conewango Valley Country Club in Warren, PA.
