Long time Maple Grove Cross Country coach Robert “Doc” Rappole captured the title of Chautauqua Striders 2016 Winter 5K Series champion. The Winter 5K Series is a series of five 5K races over seven weekends in January and February that start and end at the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Points for each race are accumulated and totaled together using an age graded system. This year’s event had 107 series participants which was an increase from last year’s 95 participants and there were 142 total runners who participated in at least one race. Each participant received a pair of Striders winter gloves and a gift certificate from the Jamestown Cycle Shop for participating along with the chance to win a Wing City Grille gift certificate where a handful were raffled off at each race. “I want to thank the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club for their tremendous hospitality in hosting us again this year for the series and also a big thank you to the Jamestown Cycle Shop and Wing City for their support and gift certificates for the participants which really helped make this event a success,” claimed Sean Hanus, Director of Events, Marketing, and Athletics for Chautauqua Striders. Hanus sees big plans for the series in the future. “This event continues to grow in participation each year and the runners really enjoy it because there are really no other races in the area around this time of year due to the weather and it is a unique idea and local event so it really brings a lot of dedicated runners out.” Rappole was followed up by second place finisher John Gustafson and third place finisher Kathy Gustafson. The awards for the Winter 5K Series will be presented at the annual Striders Athletic Club banquet at the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club on Monday, March 7th at 6:30 pm.
