Country music drifts in the background as patrons enjoy delicious platters of homemade foods. Quilts and Amish baskets line the walls, basking in the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. Placemats adorn the tables, depicting a map of local Amish establishments, alongside overturned coffee cups awaiting the piping hot brew. A bright red and green holiday banner declares “R and M,” the name sake of the cozy diner. Jason Riddell and Jennifer Riddell Adams continue the legacy of R and M Restaurant, building on the dreams of their parents.
Russ and Mary Riddell opened R and M Restaurant in 1981, bringing a casual dining spot to Randolph, NY. Jason and Jennifer grew up in the family business, learning much from their parents. Jason recalls working in the diner as of 1988. “I started working on the floor for Mom and Dad,” he says. Two years ago, the brother and sister team decided to take on the restaurant themselves, continuing the tradition. “I think what makes it special is that it is family,” Jennifer says with a smile. “If they aren’t family, it’s people who have worked here so long…they are family!” Close knit relationships are very important in this establishment, from the staff to the patrons.
A memorable feature of the restaurant is the Amish buggy located in their dining room. Patrons can choose to dine inside the buggy, adding to the quaint ambiance. “A lot of people are like, ‘You can sit in it? Really?!” Jennifer exclaims. “When we came up with the idea, we weren’t sure where we were going to go with it.” While not to scale, it was built by an Amish man with genuine buggy parts. Adults and children alike delight in the piece, a unique symbol of Amish culture.
R and M offers a wide selection of foods, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. “We get a lot of breakfast all the time – that’s why we keep it on all day long,” Jason explains. One of the biggest sellers is the ‘Breakfast Skillet’, a scramble with a variety of vegetable, cheese, and meat choices, served with sliced tomato and grilled wheat berry toast. For burger fanatics, Jason suggests the ‘Ultimate Duke Burger’, topped with lettuce tomato, raw or grilled onion, Swiss, American or Cheddar cheese, peppers and onions. Soups are also served daily, often a different feature for every day. On the sweeter side, cinnamon rolls, muffins and pies are made in house, as well as a tempting assortment of sundaes. A menu is available at the register, listing the specials for the month. “A lot of people are big on the Rubens, so people will look ahead on the menu,” Jennifer says, laughing.
R and M Restaurant is located at 265 Main Street in Randolph, NY. They are open during the winter Monday through Wednesday 7 am to 7 pm, Thursday through Saturday 7 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from 7 am to 3 pm. In April, they begin their summer hours, open Sunday through Wednesday from 7 am to 8 pm and Thursday through Saturday from 7 am to 9 pm. Located just off of I-86 between Jamestown, NY and Salamanca, NY, this eatery is a must for those craving an old fashioned good time. “It’s a family environment, right off the express way.” Jason says. Great food, a relaxed atmosphere, and a warm welcome await in the heart of Amish country; dine at R and M Restaurant, and take a stroll back in time.
