Menu Released for 1850s Dinner Event

The Fenton History Center and Busti Historical Society invite all to enjoy an authentic mid-19th century dinner. Robert Cross of 3Cs Catering will be cooking an 1850s era dinner based on period recipes and available produce and meat at that time. The dinner is Thursday, May 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The menu includes potato corn chowder, beef roulades in gravy, stuffed roast turkey, roasted root vegetables, seasonal vegetable, corn bread and rolls with apple bread pudding with maple liqueur glaze for dessert. Following the dinner, Cross will discuss meal preparation in the 1850s and answer other questions concerning the menu and meal.

“This is a great partnership between our two societies. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and very interesting. We are working on creating the most authentic evening we can, and we hope many potential members come,” says Joni Blackman, Fenton Director. Guests are encouraged, but not required, to wear period appropriate clothing from the 1800s. If interested, one can browse a selection of early to mid-19th century attire for men and women at the Fenton History Center website, All guests will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken, for a reasonable donation, to remember the evening.

Local musician Sue Tillotson will be providing live music following the event. Guests will also have the chance to learn period dances.

Bob Shultz of the Busti Historical Society has created a very interesting exhibit based on the local Jamestown Journal newspaper’s reports of the time period of the dinner. He said, “It’s been a lot of fun reading the local papers from that time period. I hope our dinner guests learn as much as I did.” From advertising to everyday events and happenings, readers will get a real feel for life in Busti and Jamestown in the 1850s.
