JAMESTOWN – On August 6, Dr. Todd E. Golde MD, PhD, Director of the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease at the University of Florida, Dr. David Morgan PhD, CEO of the University of South Florida Health Byrd Alzheimer Institute and Dr. Russell Bauer PhD, Neuropsychologist and researcher in the effects of head injury (including NFL players) and dementia at the University of Florida, presented a symposium at Memory Garden in Jamestown NY.

The event, which was hosted by owner Nicholas T. Ferreri and Memory Garden, a leader in Memory Care in WNY, focused on the progress that is being made in developing treatments, the challenges that are still faced, and the promise that in the foreseeable future their enhanced knowledge will translate into therapies that benefit patients.

Some key points touched on were 1) We need to think of Alzheimer’s disease as a chronic illness, NOT a normal disease of aging; 2) Diagnosing and testing are very important; new tools are being developed to identify risk years before someone shows signs or symptoms of the disease; 3) As in the research for heart disease, the focus at this time is aiming toward prevention, not a cure; 4) While there are certain risk factors for the disease, the concept of prevention leads to the concept of brain health; physical activity and socialization are very important.

Despite Alzheimer’s being the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, research support for Alzheimer’s is vastly underfunded compared to other comparable diseases. The tools to prevent Alzheimer’s have just been developed over the last 5 years. What’s needed now are the resources and the hard work to perform the expensive prevention studies needed to prove the effectiveness of the drugs.  Dr. Morgan stated, “I am absolutely convinced we will have the capacity to prevent Alzheimer’s disease by 2020.”

Memory Garden strives to be on the forefront of Alzheimer’s care and is looking forward to an ongoing relationship with these distinguished researchers in the Alzheimer’s field.  Memory Garden is located at 560 Fairmount Ave., Jamestown, NY.  For more information about our Partners In Care In-Home Alzheimer’s Care, Comfort Today Wellness Center or Memory Garden Residence,  all specializing in memory care, please call 716-488-9434 between the hours of 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
