JAMESTOWN – Don S. Weaver, Jr. “Dean”, the Chair of the Board of Directors for Lutheran Social Services, was honored with one of two Trustee of the Year awards from LeadingAge New York. LeadingAge is a national association of 5,500 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to expanding the world of possibilities for aging. Their work enables and empowers people to live fully as they age.

“There are 600 agency members of LeadingAge in New York State,” said Tom Holt, Lutheran president and CEO. “For Dean to be recognized at this level is quite an honor.”

After serving on the Lutheran Social Services Board for only nine months, Dean had been named Vice Chair and soon was asked to take over the chairmanship after the untimely death of his friend, who was the chairman at that time.  “Dean willingly stepped in and has served unselfishly,” Holt said. “His steadfast leadership has allowed Lutheran the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities like the HEAL funding for senior services and the expansion of programs for GA Family Services. We are now in a much stronger position going into an uncertain future. Under Dean’s direction we have expanded our services to provide the right care, in the right place at the right cost.” he said.

Trustees play a very important role in the not for profit arena. They are dedicated, trusted colleagues who bring great value by their leadership and support. Dean accepted the award at a dinner in his honor. “I am extremely gracious and humbled,” he said. “I think the world of Lutheran.” He thanked his family and close friends for their influence and support in his life. “This is really a team award,” he added. “As a board, we all get along well and it’s a real privilege and honor to be part of this first class team.”
