Lincoln Elementary School students and PTA recently raised $800 during their annual Coin Wars for fourth grader Alexis Ackley who is battling cancer. Students collected money for two weeks and deposited it in buckets in the cafeteria. The students raised $740.60 and the Lincoln School PTA rounded the donation up to $800. The third grade raised the most money.
The third and fourth graders vote on who will receive the money each year. This year, the vote was for their classmate, Alexis.
“We wanted to help Alexis because she maybe needs some money to help with her trips to the hospital,” said Lincoln Elementary School third grader Samuel Mathis. “Plus she goes to our school and we all know her and we wanted to help her. It is good to give back. It makes you feel good.”
Alexis and her family are very appreciative of the donation and all the support.
“I think the whole school has just gone above and beyond to help Alexis,” said her mother, Kristin Ackley. “Not only with this amazing donation that will help with travel and costs, but everyone, from teachers to staff to other students, have helped make sure she is caught up in school. Everyone has been so great.”
Alexis agrees. “It makes me so happy that they care about me and want to help. The whole school always donates to local charities and it’s always made me feel good to help do that. Now, I really appreciate that they helped me too.”
