JPS Announces Interim Superintendent

The Jamestown Board of Education announced at tonight’s meeting the appointment of Sylvia A. Root as the interim superintendent effective February 27, 2017. Ms. Root has over 30 years experience in the New York State public education system including superintendent, principal, assistant principal and teacher. Ms. Root has worked with numerous districts as an interim superintendent to help ensure a smooth transition between past and future superintendents of schools.

“We are pleased to have someone with Sylvia’s level of expertise coming in as our interim superintendent,” said JPS Board President Paul Abbott. “We are confident that she will help make this transition a smooth one for our students, parents, staff and community.”

Ms. Root retired in 2005 as superintendent of the Potsdam Central School District. Most recently, she was interim superintendent for the Springville-Griffin Institute Central School District. Ms. Root has also been an interim superintendent in the Holland Central School District, Oxford Academy and Central School District, Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School District, Warren County School District and Potsdam Central School District.

Ms. Root holds New York State Certifications as a School District Administrator and Secondary Math Teacher (Permanent). She received her Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from the State University of New York College of Brockport and her Masters of Science in Secondary Education from Elmira College.

Ms. Root has volunteered as the vice president of the Breast Cancer Network from 2015 to present and has been a member of the St Mary Church Prayer Shawl Group since 2011.

“I am looking forward to serving and supporting the educational system at Jamestown Public Schools,” said Ms. Root.
