JHS Announces 2017 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Jamestown High School is proud to announce its 2017 Valedictorian, Kelly Emerson, and Salutatorian, Madison Card.

“These young women have worked extremely hard during their high school careers and are most deserving of these honors,” said JHS Principal Mike McElrath. “Their commitment to academics is a testament to their work ethic and drive. They will certainly represent our school and community well as they take the next step in their education.”

Valedictorian Kelly Emerson is the daughter of Melissa and Bill Emerson. She will be attending Case Western Reserve University to study biology on the pre-medicine track.

Ms. Emerson has received numerous awards and honors including: Zonta Club’s Young Women in Public Affairs Award, Theodore Peterson Award for Chemistry, All-WNY Scholar Athlete, University of Rochester Award, Susan B. Anthony & Fredrick Douglass Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, Student of the Year, Bildungsroman Award, Fessenden, Laumer & DeAngelo Fall Scholar Athlete, Rookie of the Year (Tennis), Leadership Award (Tennis), Sportsmanship Award (Tennis), New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Alison Ney Christa Stineman Memorial Scholarship, Excellence in English Award, Jamestown High School Class of 1950 Scholarship, Jamestown School Forest Scholarship, Oscar Price Valedictorian Award and Jasmine Cantor Scholarship.

Ms. Emerson has been actively involved while at JHS: Student Government (co-secretary), Key Club (vice president), Varsity Tennis, Ski Club, Chautauqua Area Scholarship Program, National Honor Society (co-vice president) and Key Leader.

“JHS is special because of the numerous ways one is able to excel,” said Ms. Emerson. “From the AP courses to the teachers who truly care, JHS stands out like no other.”

Salutatorian, Madison Card, is the daughter of Ryan and Penny Card and Shannon Card. She will be attending the University of New Haven to study forensic science.

Ms. Card has received numerous awards and honors including: Eunice Amelia Anderson Award for Girls, Richard J. Sciascia Science Award, Grace Dorman Award, Theodore Peterson Award, Ethel Davis Salutatorian Award, Jamestown High School Class of 1960 Scholarship, Jamestown School Forest Scholarship and Jasmine Cantor Scholarship.

Ms. Card has been actively involved while at JHS: Symphonic Band (clarinet), National Honor Society and Winged Ox Players, a local theater group.

Jamestown High School will hold its Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, June 22nd at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater. JHS Baccalaureate will be Wednesday, June 21st at 7 p.m. at SS Peter & Paul Church.
