Expanded partnerships were explored as the Jamestown YMCA Association and Jamestown Community College hosted a delegation of nine professionals from the YMCA-YWCA of Chengdu, China in late June.
The partnership began in 2009 when Jon O’Brian, professor of history at JCC and director of the YMCA’s Camp Onyahsa, represented JCC on a visit to the Sichuan region of China at the invitation of the Chinese government.
Chengdu, a city of over 14 million people, is the capital of Sichuan province.
Led by Yibao Hua, general secretary of the YMCA-YWCA of Chengdu, the visiting delegation included officials responsible for public affairs, membership, and arts programs.
Past partnership activities have included individuals from Chengdu serving on Onyahsa’s summer counseling staff and three pairs of JCC students interning as English tutors at the Chengdu YMCA’s main branch as well as an orphanage the association operates in Jintang, China.
The Chengdu guests stayed in JCC’s residence halls and toured the college’s campuses in both Jamestown and Olean. They also visited the Jamestown YMCA, Eastside YMCA, Camp Onyahsa, and the YMCA of the Twin Tiers in Olean.
The delegation’s itinerary also included a visit to Jamestown City Hall hosted by Mayor Sam Teresi and tours of the city’s public safety department, a visit to the Reg Lenna Civic Center and downtown Jamestown galleries, and tours of Chautauqua Institution and the Seneca Nation Museum in Salamanca.
