The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) announces that fall water main flushing will be limited this year due to the Harrison Street bridge project.
In preparation for the bridge project, the BPU had to close water valves on a major water supply line near the bridge. Without the line in operation, there likely would not be enough water or water pressure to complete flushing throughout the entire system.
As a result of this temporary change, the BPU will flush lines in the Village of Falconer, followed by only two days of water main flushing on the north side of Jamestown, weather-permitting.
Pre-flushing in Falconer will begin as usual at 2 p.m. Friday, October 4, in the areas of Aldren, Mapleshade, Ralph and Valmeere. The complete Village of Falconer will be flushed from 8 p.m. Saturday, October 5, overnight into Sunday, October 6, until Falconer is entirely flushed.
During Falconer flushing, water may be discolored on the north side of Jamestown as well as in the Village.
Limited flushing of the BPU Water Division system will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. only on Monday and Tuesday, October 7 and 8.
A color-coded map showing areas to be flushed is included in BPU customer newsletters sent to customers in September. The map also is posted on www.jamestownbpu.com and will be in the Post Journal on September 28.
Most water customers whose streets will be flushed will receive automatic calls indicating which day to expect flushing. Business water customers also will be called three weeks in advance of flushing. Customers who want to receive such calls should be certain that their phone numbers are up-to-date on their BPU accounts.
Flushing can discolor water, especially when water line cleaning takes place in the customers’ immediate areas near their scheduled flushing days. Customers may see discolored water at any time during flushing, even on days other than their scheduled flushing days.
The primary precaution to take during water main flushing is to check for discolored water before doing laundry and to avoid pulling discolored water into hot water tanks. It is suggested that customers set aside water for cooking or drinking a day or so before their flushing days.
Should customers get caught with discolored laundry as a result of flushing, they can stop at BPU Customer Service, 92 Steele Street, to obtain free commercial rust/iron stain remover. Before the laundry is dried, it should be rewashed in the stain remover. Town and Village offices in BPU water territory also carry the product.
If discolored water enters the business or household, it can be expected to clear in 12-24 hours.
It is generally safe to use and flush your toilet during flushing, even on your scheduled flushing day. If you flush your toilet and see discolored water, continue to use and flush your toilet throughout the day as needed. Once the water settles in the main, which may take some time, clear water eventually will be drawn into your household plumbing again and the discolored water will clear from your toilet.
