How to Lose Weight

Today, I’d like to talk diet. What is the best diet for most people to lose weight? It is actually pretty straight forward: ketogenic. And we will go into why that is.

The ketogenic diet has been around for while, in fact since 1921. It was first used to help epileptic patients avoid having seizures. Since then research has found the ketogenic diet to help other things, such as weight loss, Cancer, Heart disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Brain injuries and Acne.

The ketogenic diet is based more on what people traditionally ate. Our ancestors ate whole food such as meat, fish, birds, eggs, vegetables, seeds and nuts. Up until recently, the average diet was high in fat and low in sugar. In fact, it is estimated before the industrial revolution that 60–70% of the human diet was fat. Amazingly, modern research supports what the ketogenic diet suggests, that optimum fat levels are 60-75% of our diet.
The standard ketogenic recommends that 75% of the diet be healthy fats, 20% protein and 5% of the diet be carbs from vegetables or low carb fruits such as berries. This is quite a change from the standard American diet. The American diet though has contributed to the huge explosion of obesity in the United States. Currently, about ¾ of Americans are now morbidly obese. Along with the weight increase are sky rocketing rates of disease that are directly related to weight gain.
Where do we start? It is a big jump to go from low fat, high carb diet to a low carb, high fat diet. What we do in our office is switch people gradually, starting with one thing at a time. Say, start with breakfast. Do you have cereal every morning? How about having eggs three times per week? Start where you are at. The time is now. Your health is the most important thing you have.
