Home is Where Health Begins

At our office, we are constantly asked by patients for ideas for them to create cleaner healthier homes. I tell people it is all about the basics and gradually switching out the bad stuff with better stuff.

In a nut shell, we want to avoid cancer-causing chemicals and heavy metals. Over time, substitute in non-toxic alternatives. Eat whole organic foods.

What I find works best is to pick one thing at a time and change over as things need to be replaced. An easy example is lettuce, next time you are in the store buy some organic lettuce. Organic lettuce is virtually the same price as regular lettuce so there is no reason why it can’t be a quick switch.

With other household products, it takes a little more work to figure out what is best. So I made of list of a few things to look for to avoid.
Tricolsan has been found to disrupt hormones and promotes multiple kinds of cancers. Best to avoid this chemical. It is commonly found in toothpaste, soap , cookware and toys. It is used to prevent bacteria.

Parabens are found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, facial and shower cleansers and scrubs. Look for any word on a label ending in -paraben. Parabens have been found to cause endocrine disruption, cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity.

Benzyl acetate commonly found in perfumes, soaps and lotions. It has been found in research studys to promote stomach and pancreatic cancers.
Aluminum is found in deodorant, soda cans and cookware. Aluminum accumulates in the kidneys, brain, lungs, liver and thyroid. It attacks central nervous system and has been found to cause mental impairment, memory loss and delayed growth.

This is a short list of the many things we expose ourselves to everyday. If you want to look up things you are using, go to the Environmental Working Groups “Skin Deep Database”.
