The family of Frank A. Vassallo recently established a fund in his memory at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
The Frank A. Vassallo Memorial Fund will provide financial support to Starflight, Inc., in Jamestown, a medevac service that transports critically ill and injured patients that require specialized treatment.
For many years, Vassallo served on the board of directors at WCA Hospital and Starflight, Inc.
“Dad was very proud of this honor, and would talk about it all the time,” Vassallo’s daughter, Kim Rebstock, said.
Vassallo passed away in August 2016 following a courageous 10-year battle with cancer.
A member of Jamestown High School’s Class of 1964, Vassallo served in the U.S. Air Force from March 1966-October 1970. During this time, he worked as a cook and later a manager of the Officer’s Club.
Following his service, he began an illustrious career as club manager at Moon Brook Country Club. For over 40 years, Vassallo greeted, hosted and supported members and guests at the local golf course and banquet facility.
“(Dad) lived and loved Moon Brook,” Rebstock, said. “He treated the staff like family and each and every member was his friend.”
In addition to a seventy-hour workweek, Vassallo also found time to serve his community. A proud veteran, he was active with the Moose Club 1681 and Elks 263, and would often cook breakfast for his fellow veterans and Eagles Club 2145.
“He loved his Tuesday morning breakfasts with his old gang from the Eastside,” Rebstock said. “Everyone who knew him, loved him and I am just so proud to be his daughter.”
