Foods are Wrecking Your Hormones

Foods we commonly eat are upsetting our hormone balance. With the knowledge of what foods affect hormones, we can take control of our swings and get back to steady.  If we look at the foods we are consuming, we can likely find culprits to the hormone swings we feel. Here are a list of the common worst foods for hormones.

Sugar affects our body in many different ways. Sugar causes insulin to spike, which can lead to other hormones going out of balance such as estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. With a diet high in sugars, our body is forced to overproduce insulin, that leads to insulin resistance, which lessens the body’s ability to manage blood hormone levels.

Non-organic foods have been found to contain pesticides, herbicides, PCB’s, and mercury, among other things. These toxins have been found to have endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). EDCs disrupt the hormone signaling in your body by mimicking natural hormones and blocking their receptors.

Grains along with sugars increase inflammation in the body. The inflammation process leads to more stress that suppresses the adrenal, thyroid, and gonads and causes increased autoimmunity.

Factory farmed animals are routinely fed seven different hormones to increase growth and weight. The hormones have been found to concentrate in the animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy. These hormones have been banned in Europe due to their effect on human estrogen levels.

Milk contains IGF–1 which is a growth hormone. Excess IGF–1 has been found to increase risk of diabetes and increased triglycerides.

Alcohol not only effects your brain, but also your hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which regulate hormone production in the body. Alcohol also reduces testosterone and increases cortisol, the stress hormone.

Soy acts as a phytoestrogen, which blocks normal estrogen binding, inhibits thyroid function, and deceases testosterone. High phytoestrogens have been found to cause infertility, weight gain, and cancer.

What is left to eat? Eat organic foods in as close to their natural state that you can eat them. The foods that our great grandparents ate and everyone before them ate.
