Erectile Dysfunction

I find in my practice, many men have trouble talking about Erectile Dysfunction (ED). I find their wives have no problem telling when their men aren’t functioning! It is an embarrassing subject, but it could be a sign of something serious.
ED can be caused by both mental and physical factors. The first thing to differentiate is which one is the cause. It is actually very easy to find if it is mental or physical. If the man wakes up at attention, then the problem is a mental one. If he doesn’t then, it is time to look for physical problems.
Let’s talk about some of the risks. Men with ED have a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. Even men with mild ED have been found to have a greater risk of dying prematurely from any cause. If we think about this, it makes sense. For a man to get an erection, he needs lots of blood flow. If the blood flow is inhibited for any reason, then ED.
The major inhibitor of blood flow is inflammation. Inflammation is mainly caused by four things: foods, chemical, metals and immune challenges. Out of these four, the one that we can most greatly control is food. So which foods are good and which are bad?
The bad inflammation foods are sugars and grains (carbohydrates). The place to start is reducing and eliminating those foods such as candy, cookies and cakes. The men, who I treat, notice two things when they cut the carbs, not only is ED helped but also urinary frequency goes down.
Next is to add in more good foods. Harvard University found that men who added in foods rich in flavonoids reduced their ED by 15%. Flavonoids are antioxidants that counteract deterioration of cells. Foods rich in antioxidants are blueberries, black berries and strawberries. Most men need some type of nutritional supplementation also.
What about the little blue pill? Recent research has found that Viagra causes an 84% increase in the deadliest form of skin cancer. It also masks dangerous heart conditions. If you buy Viagra online, Forbes found that 77% of Viagra was fake and potentially dangerous. The fake Viagra was found to contain heavy metals, ink, drywall dust, amphetamines and Flagyl.
The safest way to decrease ED is by changing diet and lifestyle and supplementing any nutritional deficiencies. There are no short cuts.
