The Adult Education division of the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES will hold a Phlebotomy course at the Hewes Educational Center in Ashville beginning in January 2017.
The four-month evening course is designed to prepare students for an entry-level position at a local hospital, outpatient clinic or blood donor facility. Participants will learn about blood collection methods and styles as well as venipuncture. They will work on communication skills, sterile techniques, clerical/receptionist tasks and point-of-care testing. Students will also learn about specimen collection for drug and alcohol testing in the workplace.
In addition to the classroom lecture and hand-on (76 hours) components, a 24-hour clinical rotation is included in the course for 100 hours total. Students must have physical and required immunizations prior to starting clinical rotation.
Classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 19, 2017, and continuing through approximately April 20, 2017. The fee is $825 with additional costs for lab coat, physical examination and immunizations as well as an $85 book fee.
