JAMESTOWN – Animal actor auditions for two canine characters in Jamestown Community College’s upcoming production, Legally Blonde: The Musical, will be held on June 19 beginning at 7 p.m. in Scharmann Theatre.

Dogs brought to the audition must be well-mannered and in good health with current shots.

“We are hoping to find a well-behaved and trainable Chihuahua to play Elle’s energetic and preciously prissy Bruiser,” said director Robert Schlick. “Ideally, it would be a fairly young dog about three or four years old, not too high-strung, actor-friendly, and not inclined to barking.

“They say never work with dogs or children on stage, but I’ve done both in the past to pretty good success,” Schlick notes. “This time, with two dogs needed, will be an incredible challenge! I’m very excited about this, and scared to death at the same time.”

The other dog needed for the show has more flexibility in the casting, but it should be a small to medium-sized dog.  “Ideally, this one will be either an English Bulldog or a pug to portray Paulette’s stolen best friend Rufus. It should be a dog with a face that only a mother (or another dog) could love. Sometimes these dogs’ faces are so ugly they are adorable,” Schlick said.

The audition process will consist of each dog appearing on stage with several people who will interact with it.  The dog will be asked to perform any tricks it knows. Although it is not necessary for the dog to already know any tricks, if it can perform something at the audition it will help determine if the dog can be trained to do other tricks.

An audition form must be completed by each dog owner. Previous animal acting experience and the availability of the owner for the rehearsal and performance schedules must be outlined.

Rehearsals for Legally Blonde: The Musical begin in September. Performances will be held November 2-4, 9-10, and 16-17.
