Chautauqua Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council
Chautauqua Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council (CASAC) was recently awarded $2,000 by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation (CRCF). The funding has been used to create an online Prevention Works Video Library, available at www.casacweb.org.
There are currently six short videos that provide tools and techniques on the following topics: social norms, assertiveness, self-esteem, decision-making, coping with anxiety, and communications skills.
Stress and struggles come in many forms throughout life. We all need to learn to adapt to difficult or challenging life experiences. These six videos can help us learn how to deal with difficulties when they arise, as well as prepare us for challenges in the future. With enough practice, the skills learned in these videos will provide techniques that just come naturally. Something we may remember when times get tough. Just knowing that we have built up our skills of resilience can be a great comfort, and even a happiness booster.
Because today’s youth face many risks, including substance use, learning to respond to risks before they become problems and enhancing protective factors is the goal behind CASAC’s Prevention Works Video library. The earlier youth are taught valuable life skills, the less likely they are to engage in drug use and other problem behaviors later in life.
Schools and youth-based organizations are encouraged to present the videos during Red Ribbon Week, October 23rd – October 31st. The 2-3 minute video clips are great supplemental material to include in morning announcements, during health class, youth groups or other avenues to help generate discussion surrounding tools that youth can use to get through tough times instead of referring to alcohol or other substances.
Since 1974, Chautauqua Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council (CASAC), a not-for-profit United Way partner agency, has been dedicated to providing prevention education and community awareness pertaining to alcohol and other drugs. CASAC is the only New York State Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) approved and supported alcohol and other drug prevention agency in Chautauqua County. CASAC is one of forty community based councils across the state and one of over two-hundred nationwide.
