JAMESTOWN – Cooperation between local organizations has led to “bonus” gardens being added to this year’s Secret Gardens Tour offered by the Jamestown Audubon Society.
The Saturday, June 30 event regularly features five “secret” gardens that require access to the gardeners’ property.
Jamestown Renaissance Corporation (JRC) received funding from the Sheldon, Lenna and Chautauqua Region Community Foundations to put toward “GROW Jamestown” initiatives that promote gardening and neighborhood beautification. Peter Lombardi, Director of Neighborhood Initiatives for JRC, worked with Secret Gardens Tour organizer Merle Szydlo to create a self-guided walking tour of “GROW Jamestown” gardens visible from the street on the north side of Jamestown.
JRC, Audubon, Lakeview Avenue Community Action Project (LACAP), and Northside PRIDE are all tempting you to come walk the northside with four “bonus” gardens in the vicinity of the tour gardens. The “bonus” gardeners in the Lincoln/Liberty neighborhood are Kurt and Cathy Carlson, Bob Doverspike, Karen Inwood, and Sue Schwartz.
A brochure with the walking tour route of northside “Grow Jamestown” gardens will be available at each of the Secret Gardens and can used throughout the summer.
Tenders of the five “secret” gardens are:
- Santo Armeli, 203 Hazzard Street, Jamestown
- Ruth Baker, 46 Grant Street, Jamestown
- Susan Dickerson, 21 East Elmwood Avenue, Falconer
- Marijka Lampard, 524 Lakeview Avenue, Jamestown
- David Metzler, 34 Grant Street, Jamestown
Tour hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
The tour ticket includes a brief description of each garden, directions, parking recommendations, and an excellent map.
Presale tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Audubon Center and Sanctuary; Four Seasons Nursery, Lakeview Gardens, Peterson Farm, Secret Gardens Flower Shop, and Stillwater Garden Market in Jamestown; Lakeside Cottage Shoppe in Bemus Point; Mike’s Nursery in Lakewood; and Robert’s Nursery in Falconer.
Tickets are $12 the day of the tour and are available at each of the gardens as well as the ticket outlets.
