Whatever your age, whether you like to run, or if walking is more your speed, there’s a spot for you at Audubon Community Nature Center’s Wild 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, July 29.
Race day schedule is:
8-8:45 a.m.: Same-day registration
9 a.m.: Race begins
10:30 a.m.: Award ceremony begins for those who have completed the race.
Prizes will be awarded to the first three overall male and female walker and runner finishers. Age group awards will be given to the top three finishers in each for runners and top finisher in each for walkers. Age groups are 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+.
Wild 5K is the fifth of 12 races for which runners participating in the 2017 Chautauqua Striders/UPMC Chautauqua WCA Runner of the Year Series will receive points. You can find more information on this year-long running competition designed to determine the top area distance runners at chautauquastriders.org/race-results/.
The Wild 5K is a great family volunteer opportunity. More volunteers are needed for race day, especially to serve as trail cheerleaders/direction pointers from before the start to the end of the race. To help, call (716) 569-2345 during business hours or email volunteer coordinator Katie Finch at email@example.com.
After the race, you can visit with Liberty, the Bald Eagle, and tour the exhibits throughout the Nature Center.
Then continue to have a wild day at Roger Tory Peterson Institute’s Wild America Nature Festival at Panama Rocks (July 29 and 30). There you can meet wild animals, taste delicious treats in the Local Food Cook-Off, see and shop for art from over 40 artists in the Nature Fine Art and Craft Show, listen to live music, participate in fun classes and activities for all ages, and expand your mind with nationally renowned authors Douglas Tallamy and Michael Phillips, landscape painter Thomas Paquette, and wildlife painter Michael DiGiorgio.
Weinberg Financial Group and JCC Total Fitness are major sponsors of the Wild 5K Run/Walk. Other sponsors include Burger King #522, Don’s Car Wash, Arthur R. Gren Co. Inc., Hot Bodies Tanning, Indulge Salon and Spa, LandPro Equipment, LUV Toyota, Save-A-Lot, Southern Auto Exchange, and Tops Friendly Markets.
Proceeds from the race will be used to help protect Audubon’s more than 600 acres of unique habitat that decreases flooding in surrounding communities, purifies drinking water, and provides sanctuary to plants and animals of all shapes and sizes.
Registration is $25. A special 10% discount is extended to members of ACNC and Chautauqua Striders Athletic Club.
