The holidays can be hectic, and sometimes a getaway for the kids can be good for everyone.

Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) is inviting children ages 5 to 12 to come and play and learn for a day during the school vacation.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, they can play outside, learn about winter animals, spend time with friends, escape the holiday doldrums, and enjoy time at Audubon.

Similar to ACNC’s summer Day Camp, this day will incorporate some of those elements in winter style. Kids will be divided into age groups for some activities and come together as a large group for other ones.

Time will be spent enjoying the outdoors as well as camp games and songs inside.

Children need to bring a lunch that does not need refrigeration, a packed snack, a water bottle, and extra clothes, socks, and footwear.

Be sure to dress them in layers and for the weather. ACNC recommends waterproof or water resistant gloves or mittens. They will keep the children’s hands warmer and drier than knit ones and allow more time for outdoor experiences.

Cost for the day is $30 for ages 5-12 or $25 for Nature Center members. Additional siblings receive a $5 discount. (Children must be capable of taking care of their own toilet needs.)

Teens may assist for the day. Please call to see if their help is needed.
Enrollment is limited. Paid reservations are required by Tuesday, December 26. To register, call (716) 569-2345 during business hours or click through “Holiday Camp” on the Programs page at auduboncnc.org.

Audubon education programs are funded with support from the Carnahan Jackson Foundation, Jessie Smith Darrah Fund, Holmberg Foundation, Hultquist Foundation, and Lenna Foundation.

Audubon Community Nature Center is at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, New York, and Warren, Pennsylvania. To learn more, call (716) 569-2345 or visit auduboncnc.org.

Year-round hours for the Nature Center and its Blue Heron Gift Shop are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1-4:30 p.m. Sundays. The building will be closed December 24 and 25 and January 1. Bald Eagle viewing and trails to walk, snowshoe or cross country ski are open dawn to dusk daily.

Audubon Community Nature Center builds and nurtures connections between people and nature by providing positive outdoor experiences, opportunities to learn about and understand the natural world, and knowledge to act in environmentally responsible ways.
